Shoutout to Schilling

Okay, so I didn’t go to bed when I said I would, a bad habit of mine.  SInce I apparently feel like blogging some more tonight, I thought I’d send a shoutout to Curt Schilling and his blog (38pitches.com).  Curt said some nice things about our cinematic trailer so I thought I’d say thank you to him.

So, thanks Curt!  I look forward to seeing a great trailer from you folks at 38Studios as well.

  1. His concept art looks pretty good. Thanks to Curt for making my teen years playing EQ1 more socially acceptable. lol

Mark, how stoked are you that your baby is coming out in two weeks?!?

  2. Interesting. It’s one thing to say you like competition on your blog. It is another thing entirely to point readers of your blog to the website of that same competition.

I know little of this startup, but anything combining the works of McFarlane and Salvatore has my attention. Thank you for pointing me in that generalized direction.

  3. Tiresias, I try to keep things nice and simple and since Curt said nice things about WAR’s cinematic on his blog, I would be less than polite if I didn’t do something nice in return. Over the years I’ve had good relationships with a number of developers and/or folks like Games Workshop and I have no problem saying nice things (or even helping out a few of them) about them. I like to think of myself as old school that way. That’s one of the reasons why you won’t see me trash other devs/MMOs except in extraordinary circumstances.

Aikau, I don’t get excited about this stuff until a long time after we ship.

  4. Enjoying the blog Mark and am pleased to see that you respect other mmo devs and generally care about the mmo genre. I’ve been let down by so many mmos *shakes fist at AoC* and am looking forward to WAR.

    Keep it up!

  5. It really is a great cinematic. I was not expecting the Lord of Change. Fighting one of those bad boys during the Tchar’zanek fight is going to be interesting.

Thank you for starting up the blog, Mark. Forgive the moment of flattery but I guess I’m just showing my appreciation, I really enjoyed testing Warhammer. You’re always in the shadows it seems though. Developing, watching, waiting, posting when the moment is right.

Speaking of which, I would hope you appear in some more future podcasts besides the crafting one, its one of the best ones.

  6. Well thanks, Curt.

I’m sorry, I don’t know exactly who Curt Schilling is but I honostly think it’s so cool that you guys, Mark and people from other games, try to help eachother out. I’ve honostly never played a game before where the developers actually gave a darn of stuff that happened outside of the game(that wasn’t about the game).

I just have to say bravo to you Mark for actually caring about the Warhammer community and the MMO community in general.

  7. Hi there Mark.

I just wanted to cogratulate you and all your team for the great effort you are putting on your game.

I’m an elder DAoC player (played for 6 YEARS, *not months hehe* since it was launched) and I really hope WAR takes DAoC’s throne and stays there for so many years.

Keep the good work, and if you have a great success, do not ever forget about keeping in contact with the community as you’ve been doing since WAR’s first announcement. That’s the great difference, players feel important, we feel that our words are being listened, not like any other companies.

This, plus your reputation as a MMO company and Warhammer licence could bring something very good to the market. Keep the good job! Follow DAoC steps and don’t even get close to it’s failures (anyone said artifacts?)

Do not do like WoW, do not make players to stay connected for hours and hours and days and months trying to get a piece of equipment. Ahhh good old days when Epic Armor was the best of best and all you had to do was to be better than your enemy.

I also remember warmly my dear Tuscaran Glacier, funny, great drops, and still Skill > equipment.

I think I talked too much, thanks for everything Mark (and also Jeff, Paul, Josh and all the whole team behind the scenes) keep the good work!.

P.S: As I said on ten ton hammer… you better have a mohawk exclusive dwarven head hidden in your Collector’s Box or I’ll cut yer legs and kill ya bashing your head with em >:)

Oh, and sorry for my poor english :D

  8. Well, from what I have seen so far it appears like you guys have a great game to build a foundation for a successful mmorpg. I like your thinking on matters. I agree with much or your sentiment. Here’s hoping your game lives up to what I feel it can and isn’t a letdown like a few other games that come to mind. I am looking forward to playing your game.

Truth be told playing the bit I have so far I must say I haven’t felt as entertained playing an mmorpg since I fist tried WoW when the game first launched. It isn’t perfect by any means but you guys have the groundwork for something really good. Anyways, good luck with the game and on a parting note I must say I really like how interactive you guys are being with the gaming community. Its a nice breath of freash air compared to the way some other companies have been as of late.

  9. Seems like his game studio is really approaching the development of an mmo in a positive way. He has really surrounded himself with some amazing talent in Baltimore.

  10. [...] my heroes Curt Schilling. So I was surfing the Warhammer community sites and found a link to mark jacobs’ blog. In it he talks about how Curt Schilling said some nice things about the Warhammer cinematic. In [...]

  11. I think Curt’s characterization of the cinematic trailer is dead on. I’ve never before watched a game trailer and wished it were two or three times longer.

I don’t know how you couldn’t be excited.

  12. Hey Mark!
This is Khalid from Kuwait, I’ve just wanted you to know that I really enjoyed the game.. it’s exactly what I was looking for, I wish you guys a great success as a result of your obvious hard work, how you guys listen to the community, are honest and clear with us and make us truly feel that this game is for gamers from gamers. It really is an inspiration for me as a business student.. I wish you the best of luck!

  13. That’s OK Mark we are probably more than excited enough for you.

Only just noticed this blog or would have commented sooner but it was really interesting hearing about your insights into how the MMO industry and investment actually works.

It also really great to see your genuine respect for other games developers and realistic and down-to-earth attitude about developing in general.

  14. Hi Mark…

Thanks for all these updates and posts. Loving it.

Got 1 question which i was wondering if you could answer if possible.

Come launch of WAAAARRRGGHHHH… (i’m excited) i believe there will be a patch that needs to be downloaded after installation. Any idea rougly how big this patch will be?

I want to prepare myself for the torture i’ll receive from waiting for the download to complete…

  15. Very off topic but thought it might get noticed a little easier.

Basically just a recommendation / request – could you highlight your posts (gray the background ,bold the title, whatever, you get the point) Would make it a little easier to sift through some of the more popular posts.

  16. As a long time Sox fan, and closet nerd, I was so surprised / awed to find out that curt was too :) I’m really hyped that he is going to play WAR! If I ever run into a squig herder named Shill or something like that, I will guard him with my life!

lol, Great work Mark, You guys are doing a helluva job :)

  17. Not to hate on WAR but the concept art on Copernicus on 38studios looks quite awesome!

    But damn, F I N A L L Y it’s coming <3

  18. Mark Jacobs, keeps it real. I have to say that the biggest thing about the new WAR trailer was that it completely blew away the kind of lame WotLK trailer.

WotLK trailer seemed like it was scripted by a philosophy major (no offense to them), just was… not exciting, and I don’t watch trailers to think.

WAR trailer seemed like it was scripted by person with a Masters in Michael Bay. It was exciting and awesome!

  19. Mm it is coming…getting closer. Been a fair wait for some early 2004 but it’s nearly over. Only one part of the puzzle left for me…rules for Core RP server. Played RP servers in DAoC and hoping to do the same in WAR.

I’m also excited about getting the CE in my hands. Some books there I want to spend a long time looking over. Long long time coming and it’ll be good to sit back and look at the journey since Mythic picked up the ball….

So Imperator isn’t hopefully going to disappear :) Some solid creative stuff there I’m aching to get into some decade. :)

  20. Yay for Mr. Jacobs, my love! I rub you rong time

  21. Next time you catch the Schillster on the interwebs ask him if Warhammer Online is “WHO” or “WAR”.

    Looking forward to seeing Copernicus.

  22. Damn, my last comment did not appear on the section? :(

  23. Cripling, calling out something interesting ain’t hating on WAR, no worries there. As I’ve said countless times, I want other MMORPGs to succeed to help continue to expand the market. I wish 38S nothing but success.

  24. Mark, give us dwarfs a clue! Tell us that our desired mohawks are waiting for us on our Collector’s Edition for Grungni’s beard!

  25. There used to be this thing that men strove for, a certain level of respect and brotherly admiration, where they showed cordiality to their opponents. It was thought that a man should recognize and praise his opposition, because every opponent was a kind of brother.

Players shook hands and complimented each other on a game well played, and they meant it. Soldiers would treat a defeated enemy to a meal and wine, sharing stories of past achievements. These men were called gentleman. In a day and age where the term is largely only seen over nude bars and bathrooms, the original word seems to have somehow been lost.

Mr. Jacobs, this post, and the other positive comments you have made, are the behavior of a true gentleman. Please do keep that, as there are precious few of them anymore.

I also am really looking forward to WAR. I loved it in Closed Beta, and the Preview Weekend , and look forward to playing in the Warhammer world for a long time.

  26. Great to see the Blog Mark!

    I’ll enjoy reading!

Hope all is well with the Launch Madness.

  27. Don’t worry Mark. Not going to bed after you said you would seems to be a common habit on the internet. I most definately share it :D

  28. Mark,

First off you are awesome and I will gladly support your new game, War.

Hate to take you off of the WAR subject here, but there are a lot of UO players still around. We are getting restless about our future and would love to hear you talk about it more. UO does not appear anywhere on the Mythic or EA websites and it feels like the red-headed stepchild.

Just mentioning UO here and there would go a long way.

Also, about that Ultima X. Why not use that engine for a single player game? All the guts are still there…a nice, boxed single player game with a cloth map like the old days. A lot of us miss this.

A lot of us UO fans we will be playing War, but we would like the love to be flying back in our direction too.

    Thanks!

  29. I’m really hoping that you can save me Mark. I’ve looked out over the MMO landscape and I shudder at the trend of Free-2-Play–Pay-2-Win business models. The prospect of cold cash being redeemed for game advantage. The same cookie cutter “yeah but we got this!” game and its hundereds of brothers.

I’m a proud Hellgate:London subscriber(well..was) and after reading Roper’s comments on the internal struggle with trying to decide a pricing model for content vs dev expense and trying to give users too much too fast w/o QA polish and backing of a full production house; I am really interested to hear any insight or see a posting about how you guys at Mythic handled the same thing and how the EA relationship factored into that.

Bill gets alot of flakk for HG:L and FSS, but I think he deserves alot more credit for even getting an MMO out the door in his circumstances. Any advice to us future Bills?

Btw, thanks for this great blog!
